Non-Dominant Hand (Literally) Drill *

Practice Time:

Level:

Beginner

Back Hand

10 Minutes

Objective

Improve the consistency and strength of your two-handed backhand.

How the drill goes

Develop consistency and strength in your backhand by practicing with your non-dominant hand from the NVZ, midcourt, and baseline.

Both players start at the non-volley zone (NVZ) line, facing each other.

  1. Player 1 (Driller):

    • At the NVZ:

      • Practice 10 dinks using just the non dominant hand.

      • Follow with 10 dinks using a two-handed backhand.

    • Move to Midcourt:

      • Repeat the sequence: 10 shots with just the non dominant hand, followed by 10 shots with a two-handed backhand.

    • Move to Baseline:

      • Again, repeat the sequence: 10 shots with just the non dominant hand, followed by 10 shots with a two-handed backhand.

  2. Player 2 (Collaborator):

    • Returns collaborative shots to Player 1, focusing on consistency and control.

    • Ensures the ball is returned in a way that allows Player 1 to practice their backhand effectively.

  3. Role Switch:

    • After completing the full cycle (NVZ, midcourt, baseline), players switch roles.

Key Points:

  • Emphasize proper technique and form with each backhand shot.

  • Use the legs to generate power and stability, ensuring effective shot execution.

  • Focus on smooth, controlled swings to enhance consistency.

This drill helps players develop stronger, more reliable backhand shots by practicing both one-handed and two-handed techniques. By progressing from the NVZ to the baseline, players also improve their ability to execute backhand shots from different court positions.
